Sculpture

Sculpture primarily deals with space. What happens around the sculpture and how it projects interest and meaning is the goal. Sculpture can be created in different mediums but the main ones are represented at the school, wood, rock, metal and clay. Metals are expensive and take special consideration and are used in smaller projects. Clay being the oldest and most versatile and is popular. Clay sculptures are created by children and adults in any subject and size. Clay represents the principles of structure and mass.  Without structure the sculpture will collapse and without correct mass it fails to engage space properly.  The duality nature of cay is represented by additive or subtractive methods but if the water content is not maintained then manipulation is restricted and complications develop. So learning sculptural methods are divided between aesthetic principles and material characteristics. Color and other materials can be added to the principle materials.

The question however is what is important to learn first? Again clay is the simplest and easy to understand promoting basic principles of structure and mass. The fundamentals of the materials are used to capturing the subject but also the spirit of the material is also part of the work. Choosing a subject can be an abstract concept such space but any subject can be pursued like a bust, object or animal. Also sculpture can be a study in textures, space, shapes, form, movement, color and the overall feeling or emotional quality of it.

Each project is made up of elements that you can identify with. This process is a matter of picking subjects that are part of common formats like portraits, still-life, abstract compositions and master artist or art movement compositions. Once a subject or format is chosen the student and the instructor develops the project, which will reflect learning new methods and ways to create a good sculpture. These projects also can take the student into other mediums and other interests which is encouraged once these projects are close to completion. The intention is to broaden the person's horizons by engaging them in a variety of subjects and techniques that are connected to your interests.

The program is flexible and allows a person to explore mediums and subjects without changing administratively in anyway.  It is a matter of going on to the next projects. The instructor gives demonstrations regularly and provides guidance throughout the project. You can attend a specific class where everyone is learning the same thing or you can be part of the impendent study program. The choice is up to you.
