I have grown to appreciate all kinds of art and in many respects, I see value in most artistic creations even if they are not considered fine art.
So on this premise I have chosen to show you Ernst Heinrich Haeckel and explain why I like him.
Kunstformen der Natur, or Art Forms in Nature
, by Ernst Heinrich Haeckel (1834-1919), a German physician, biologist and nature philosopher. Haeckel began his career by studying to be a physician at
his father's encouragements. However in 1862 he began a path as a biologist and taught zoology at the University in Jena 1909.
During his tenure at Jena, he collected specimens to further his research into radiolarian, mineral skeletons found as plankton in the
ocean. At 60, he had produced 42 works of over 13,000 pages, including numerous scientific memoirs. A individualist in the scientific
world, he created many drawings that remain closer to art than scientifically accurate illustrations, inventing creatures to substantiate
his theories. This made his work special, and in many ways unique because of his fascination with aesthetic elements, symmetry, balance and beauty.
When you examine his work there is a special kind of light that conjures up a sense of landscape and you find yourself lost in this world of details
and mysterious enlightenment. It is as if you are looking through a microscope or keyhole and have a special seat to witness unknown
creatures for the first time. This is a meditative process as we drift among the creatures looking at the interesting shapes, textures and crevasses for long periods.
Haeckels work posses a sense of balance and beauty that is specials and today dress the walls of personal spaces and businesses around the world
In the end, Haeckel brought together his fascination with science and symmetry bridging the world between nature and art
